Minerals - Beef

By Con McCarthy

Minerals make up a small portion of an animals diet but they should be fed to all stock to maintain good health. Finishing animals need to receive a suitable mineral / vitamin supplement regardless of the length of the finishing period.

All growing animals should receive appropriate minerals for the duration of the winter housing period. It is important that their mineral inclusion rate matches their winter forage and the type of concentrate used.

For grass silage-based diets a general purpose mineral may suffice. For diets based on alternative forages e.g. maize silage or fodder / sugar beet, a maize / beet mineral is essential. For ad – lib concentrate diets, ensure that the inclusion rate of the mineral matches the feeding rate of the ration.
