The area of winter oilseed rape has decreased over the last number of years,  with an estimated 7,700 ha harvested in 2014 from a height of just over 14,500 ha in 2012.

The average yields of winter oilseed rape in Ireland are 4.2 tonnes per hectare. Winter Oilseed rape is predominantly grown as a break crop, offering an early entry for winter barley.
